IF YOU ARE A PARENT OR CARER

Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted and talk to the young person

Tell them you are worried about them and why you are worried

Ask them if they are having problems. Be specific about the types of problems they could be going through.

Let them know that many people are bullied but that it doesn’t make it right or OK.

Please listen to your child and be patient with them, stay calm even if it is distressing for you.

Encourage your child to keep a journal of what is happening.

Tell the child never to endanger himself or herself, by standing up to bullies in a situation where he or she is outnumbered.

If scared, they should run away and try to alert attention by shouting for help.

Reassure him or her that it is more shameful for a group of people to gang up on one person than for that one person to decide to get out of that situation.

Don’t be ashamed to run!

Be prepared to help the child make a safety plan to help minimise the risk of being physically assaaulted by planning safe routes from home to school.

If they are being targeted by bullies at home or in the neighbourhood, help them to make a safety plan to contact police and get help in an emergency
